Kirk Karasin remembered through Memorial Award

Kirk Karasin was the Senior Media Specialist at UBC Studios and Supervisor of the Emerging Media Lab, but more than that, he was a mentor, creator, innovator, and a dear friend who consistently pushed the boundaries of what was possible.

To celebrate his memory, his family have established the Kirk Karasin Memorial Award in Computer Science, an endowment to celebrate students who showed leadership, creativity, and a desire to use emerging technology for social good.

In its inaugural year, we celebrate winners Jerry WangJiho Kim, and Leah Fernandez. Each students’ efforts have shown technical expertise as well as an understanding of how emerging media can be used as a force for positive change. Their work exemplifies the spirit of excellence that EML and UBC Information Technology try to cultivate in the UBC community, embodying the dedication, passion, and creative spirit that Kirk was known for. Today, we celebrate not only them, but also the person who made it all possible.
