On April 10th, UBC faculty, students, and community members all gathered together to celebrate the progress of the Emerging Media Lab’s fall projects. Featuring a panel discussion of EML’s contribution to pedagogy in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), presentations from EML and MDIA 470 students, and live project demonstrations, teams were able to emphasize all the work that went in to bringing these projects to life. Audience members were then invited to experience the projects and ask questions, thereby experiencing first-hand the innovative projects that our wonderful teams created.
The projects presented at this showcase were a mix of EML projects and MDIA 470 projects. You can find a full list, as well as links to their project pages, below.
Emerging Media Lab Projects:
Judicial Interrogatory Simulator (JIS): A web-based and Virtual Reality AI courtroom built to help first-year law students prepare for their Moot Court assessment, with the potential to be expanded beyond UBC and become a resource for individuals who are forced to represent themselves in a court of law.
Nurse Practitioner VR Tool: A Virtual Reality program that aims to help Nurse Practitioners and nursing students gain experience with taking a detailed history and offering counselling to a patient by using an AI patient with a pre-specified list of symptoms and biometrics.
VR Makerspace: Seeking to explore new ways for teachers to implement new technologies, this Virtual Reality Makerspace offers both teachers and students with a digital space that is built for collaborative thought and teamwork, fostering a feeling of connectedness and collaboration within the digital world.
Behavioural Biomarker: A Virtual Reality program created to help measure and track the cognitive decline of adults affected by Alzheimer’s. The program was created for a research study run out of UBC, and the project will be employed in a research trial beginning in early June.
MDIA 470 Projects:
Developing Unreal Environments and Avatars: This project aimed to develop Unreal Engine 3D character models and environments for the Peel Virtual Camera System.
Generative AI for Creative Workflow: This project aims to employ Artificial Intelligence in order to streamline the video content creation process for creative individuals or other content creators.
AR Application for Midwifery Education: An Augmented Reality application created for Midwifery students to help them practice the procedural process required to deliver a baby.
Spatial Audio Capture for Geography Education: This project uses audio-capturing software to create immersive 360-degree auditory environments through which Geography students can enrich their educational experience by simulating real-world environments.
Retrieval Augmented Generation Framework: An Artificial Intelligence chat-bot that allows UBC administrators to compare institutional policies surrounding a variety of subjects.
Congratulations to the EML Fall 2023/24 Cohort! We look forward to seeing how your projects will impact the educational landscape of UBC, and the community within it.
